Action Academy
Action Academy
Action Academy is our virtual 10 week Summer internship program for college-aged people to learn more about voting rights history in America. During the summer, we meet twice a week, learn together in state crews, and do action together. You may be able to get college credits too!
That’s what we do here. Every summer, over 10 weeks online, you’ll explore the deep, complex history of voting rights in America—how it’s been expanded, how it’s been restricted, and why that fight still matters today. But you won’t just be learning about it—you’ll be practicing it. Through immersive activities, team-based challenges, and real-world civic engagement, you’ll begin building your own voice as a leader.
You’ll be learning alongside other passionate students and guided by a team of Action Academy leaders, scholars, organizers, and change-makers who are doing this work every day.
MISSION
At Action Academy, we are on a mission to create transformative, historically-informed, and community-centered experiences that empower young people to grow as leaders and active citizens. Together, we ground our work in the history of social movements, civic engagement, and community activism—fostering critical thinking, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility. Our goal is to help cultivate lasting habits of civic participation and public leadership, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to an engaged civic life.
We’ve built our curriculum around three core learning modules—Mindset, Mojo, and Mobilize—each offering a clear course map with weekly instruction, hands-on activities, and key competencies in history, civic engagement, and leadership development. By the end of the program, participants receive a $1,000 stipend—and, more importantly, leave equipped to mobilize their communities, engage elected officials, and analyze policy through a civic leadership lens.

Our States of Focus

Why we focus on these states
Each year, we dive deep into specific states to explore their unique history, political landscape, and democracy index. Participants in Action Academy self-select into one of these states, allowing them to choose an area of personal interest or one they feel passionate about. By focusing on these states, students not only gain a richer understanding of their historical significance but also learn about the current state of democracy, civic engagement, and governance within those regions. It’s a chance to connect the dots between history, politics, and real-world action, empowering participants to engage meaningfully with the issues that matter most in each state’s context. Hover on a state to learn why.
